Independent Living as a movement and way of life grew out of the Disability Rights Movement in the 1970’s. The independent living philosophy is a way of life that allows people with disabilities to lead empowered lives while having the same choices and control that non-disabled people enjoy. Independent Living requires some assistance to persons with disabilities, but is not meant to be full-time, residential care.
Independent Living Centers are typically non-residential, private, non-profit, consumer-controlled, community-based organizations providing services and advocacy by and for persons with all types of disabilities. Their goal is to assist individuals with disabilities to achieve their maximum potential within their families and communities.
